Design as an Attitude : Alice Rawsthorn
Interesting interview at Charleston Farmhouse as part of the Charleston Festival with Alice
Rawsthorn, the design critic.
Rawsthorn was paired with a good interviewer, Cathy Newman, as they had worked together on the Financial Times. They discussed how design can be an agent for change and how new designers are looking at major social and environmental issues.
Rawsthorn pointed out how digital technology has been a catalyst for new designers, now only by bringing new design tools but also by giving access to information and money via crowd funding. She gave good examples of all the points she made with interesting illustrations. She also talked about how this new technology was changing the diversity and breadth of the design industry.
The Q&A session was fascinating as that is where Rawthorn’s stunning recollection of names and projects really showed. To every question she could give an erudite answer with great examples of the points she was making. What a memory!
