Charmed Lives in Greece
Delightful exhibition at the British Museum looking at the friendship of Nika Ghika, John
Craxton and Patrick Leigh Fermor and their love of Greece.
The show used the
different homes of the two artists (Ghika and Carxton) and the travel writer
(Leigh Fermor) to provide the narrative of the show and blended art and writing
well. It was a nice touch that a lot of the art and books had been owned by others
members of the group.
There was a wonderful sense of light and colour in the art. I’d not come across Ghika before but I really fell in love with his work. I loved his “Tables and Chairs by the Sea” a wonderful sense of all aspects of a restaurant painted in sections. Craxton’s work focused more on the people with brightly coloured pictures of sailors and fishermen.
The words of Leigh Fermor were woven through the show in large quotes on the wall and longer sections in displays. There were lovely examples of his books with covers by Craxton.
