Lovely display at the Sam Wannamaker Theatre at the Globe of work by Rutgers BFA theatre designers from New Jersey, USA, who are currently in residence there. This is the third version of this show by costume and set design students in residence at the theatre where some design and create a cocktail hat that embodies a Shakespearean character which would work under candlelight. My favourite this time was for Julius Caesar by Isabella Deflice. My favourites though were by scenic and lighting design students who created small open boxes of a scenery design which, when you pressed a switch, produced a shadow on the back which was stunningly created from the scene in front. My favourite of these was for Twelfth Night by Benjamin Levie shown here complete with my finger. No end date given

I was a bit confused as I saw a similar show at the Globe last year. I assume this was by a new intake of students but that wasn’t clear. Costume design and costume technician students had to design and create a cocktail hat that embodies a Shakespearean character which would work under candlelight. My favourite was this one for Lady Macbeth. My favourites though were by scenic and lighting design students who created small open boxes of a scenery design which, when you pressed a switch, produced a shadow on the back which was stunningly created from the shadow of the scene in front. My pick this year was this one of Bottom. No end date given but it had disappeared by next visit in February 2024.

I loved these two for Olivia and Titania. My favourites though were by scenic and lighting design students who were tasked to create an object that with the addition of a single light source there a Shakespeare related shadows. These were small open boxes, each beautiful in their own right, which, when you pressed a switch, produced a shadow on the back which seemed was stunning created from the seat in front. I loved this one for Julius Caesar created from sheets of the US constitution. No end date given

Small display at the Globe Theatre looking at the life and work of the playwright Philip Massinger. Massinger was the leading writer for the King’s Men following Shakespeare and Fletcher and is buried in Southwark Cathedral with Fletcher. Massinger’s plays reflected the tensions of the time and included satirical portraits of the court. Massinger has largely been forgotten as a lot of his work was done with Fletcher but in a folio edition of Fletchers plays in 1647 Massinger is not acknowledged and Sir Francis Beaumont it named as Fletcher’s main collaborator. However Massinger wrote over 50 plays on his own or with others. 11 plays by him were lost when an antiquarian’s cook used them to light fires! The display consisted of a good information board alongside three cases with the earliest copies of his plays in chronological order. They show the usual Jacobean themes but picked some unusual settings and protagonists such as The Roman Actor, Emperor of the East about ...
