Falling Shawls
Interesting installation at the Festival Hall by Outi Pieski as part of the Nordic Matters Festival. It consisted of a series of tassels hanging from the ceiling of the foyer spaces. The tassels are made by the indigenous people of Scandinavia, Sami, who have a tradition called duodji of handicrafts that unite function and art. The hangings represent the spirits of the Northern Lights and a gathering of the Sami people. I found the installation looked a bit ragged but on masse the tassels broke the space up nicely and made you look again the height of the foyers and the structures around them. I’m not sure I would have got the meaning of it without the commentary though. Closes on 31 December 2017
