The Filters

Grand installation at Tate Britain by Christina Mackie.

The main piece was nine silk nets handing from the ceiling by wires from weights on the ground. They were in different bright colours and were suspended over pans of semi-crystallized dye. They did changed colour and tone as the natural light from the high windows change. I think it was saying something about colour but I’m afraid it made me think of drying tights!

Shown with it was a yellow sculpture which I have noted down and now can’t remember at all! Also a small plinth which when you looked into it contained chunks of coloured glass from a foundry which you could easily over look. The main piece used the space well but the two smaller pieces were a bit lost and it seemed a slightly wasted opportunity.

I liked the main piece but had no idea what it meant. Reading the leaflet again it says the nets “represent the filtering and dispersion of experience”. Oh well there you go! Looks like I have already filtered and dispersed it!
