Sculptures to remember those who died in World War One
Two beautiful
sculptural crosses in the nave of St Paul’s Cathedral by Gerry Judah as a
memorial to the dead of the First World War.
The huge white
crosses echo the crosses of the great cemeteries however they are encrusted
with models of cities and settlements destroyed by modern conflict. These
remind you of images from the television news of battered tower blocks with the
TV aerials still standing on the roofs.
It also
complimented the marble statues around them many of which commemorate famous
and long forgotten battles of the Napoleonic and Crimean wars. It gave the
added idea that each generation remembers in its own way.
