Stories of art Module 1 : Sainsbury Wing 1260-1500

Second session in a six week course at the National Gallery on the period covered by the Sainsbury Wing roughly 1260 to 1500.

This week the course leader Richard Stemp looked at the role of society on art in this period. He looked at who was commissioning art and how that was reflected in the works. He looked at the type of people who seem to have been attracted to the different styles. He also looked at a lot of the detail in the Crivelli Annunciation and how it was influences by events and patrons.

In the second half Carline Campbell, Curator of Early Italian art at the gallery, discussed art which was made for domestic settings focusing on wedding chests. This was fascinating but I would have liked more on other domestic art forms but time was limited.
