Sidney Nolan: Back of Beyond

Interesting exhibition at the British Museum of a set of prints drawings by Sidney Nolan shown to mark the century of his birth.

The drawings were done in 1952 when he was making a film in the remote Australian interior. Drawn with a fibre tipped pen they give a sense of the empty landscape and the people who lived there. The drawings titles all come from the film’s commentary.

The pictures had a sparse rather minimal feeling which reflected the landscape. I loved one of an abandoned cart and another of a buggy pulled by camels. A picture of a ram caught in a tree was accompanied by photographs of the incident.
