Shani Rhys James: tea on the sofa, blood on the carpet

Striking exhibition at Charleston Farmhouse of new work by Shani Rhys James.

These were large, mainly square, paintings of people, interiors and still lives in bright, exuberant colours. Evidently a lot of the works are based on memories and her own image. I loved the way she features patterned ceramics and wallpapers.

The pictures looked great in this new exhibition space at Charleston. This was the first exhibition of contemporary art I’ve seen in this space and it worked well. The pictures filled the room with colour but had room to breathe and space between them.

Closes 19 April 2020
