Surreal Science: Loudon Collection with Salvatore Arancio

Weird exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery combining 19th century scientific models and contemporary pieces by Salvatore Arancio.

The scientific works were collected by George Loudon, the Dutch art collector. They have lost their original meaning but work as weird objects in their own right and make a weird and wonderful display.

The gallery asked the artists Salvatore Arancio to select works from the collection and respond to them. I loved his ceramics and how they interact with the other objects around them. I didn’t get a chance to watch his film as you had to watch with headphones and it was busy. I loved how this show brings old objects back to life and by putting them with contemporary art makes them into art objects in their own right.

Closes 6 January 2019
