Haim Steinbach: Jaws

Delightful exhibition at White Cube, Masons’ Yard, of new work by Haim Steinbach plus a reworking of an installation by him.

The new work was surf board fins mounted on shelves either singularly on in groups and with other found objects such as Kong dog chews and a solar powered plastic bear. I’m not too sure what the works meant, maybe something environmental and about surf culture, but they had a beautiful rhythm to them and looked stark and clear against the white walls.

Downstairs there was a reworking of his 1981 installation “Display #15 – Design for a Yogurt Bar”. From the description I was expecting something enclosed, dark and claustrophobic but it was a delightful, open, room like structure which you looked through and walked into. Some of the sides were made of shower curtains and there was a still life sculpture in the middle with a coffee pot and potted flower.
