Ethel Adnan

Interesting exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey of new work by the Lebanese artist Ethel Adnan.

The bulk of this work was simple but effective landscapes in cubist style. There was a great use of colour and different textures in the paint. Some were more abstract that others and I preferred the slightly more realistic ones. She had a recurring theme of painting a particular mountain which reminded me of Cezzanne’s theme of painting  Montagne Sainte-Victoire.

I have just read the press release and realised she applies the paint with a palate knife often directly from the tube with the canvas on a flat surface.

My only gripe would be it would be nice for the works to have titles to give some idea of what they were of.
