Gilbert & George : The Corpsing Pictures

Compelling exhibition at White Cube Masons’ Yard of new work by Gilbert & George.

These pieces referenced the two meanings of corpse, a dead body and breaking down on stage during a performance. They had a bleak but humorous feel showing the two artists lying among bones and vegetation. I took them to be a modern Momento Mori.

I loved the effect of them together and the rhythm they set up. In each they wore red suits,  white shirts and red boots with striking gold soles. This set up the colour palette for all the pieces. I wasn’t so sure how they would work as single pieces.
