Christine Ay Tjoe

Dull exhibition at White Cube, Bermondsey, of new work by Christine Ay Tjoe.

The works were large abstract works. The commentary said that “figurative and partial animal protagonists or characters emerge by accident from the painting process”. I’m sorry I occasionally thought I saw an exploding bird but I’m not sure! The pictures in in quite muted colours applied in quite an expressive way.

I think these pictures suffered from being shown with the vibrant, figurative Raqib Shaw works which I have already described. Any pale abstract work would have looked dull in comparison.

Closes 11 September 2016.
