Setting the Scene: Staging and Backdrops in Studio Photographs

Small exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery looking at the backgrounds of early studio photographs.

It looked at the development of these backgrounds. I was amused by the idea that there were producers and sellers of these so different studios used the same ones plus they were used for a long time so fashions changed by the backgrounds stayed the same. I loved a picture of an unknown man on a railways bridge. It obviously had a significance to him but that is now lost.

Closes 4 December 2016.
