Drawing Room: Drawing and Photography

Difficult exhibition at the Photographers’ Gallery exploring the relationship between photography and drawing.

I have to admit that when I was trying to do this show there was a very annoying and loud guide showing a group of school children around. There were only about 15 children and it was quite a small room but the guide seemed to think they had to project their voice for the world to hear. The commentaries on many of the exhibitions were quite complex and difficult to read against her voice.

Having said that it was interesting to think that photography and drawing share  a lot, both involve graphite and silver, blank surfaces, use of paper etc I didn’t always see the relevance of some of the pictures to the subject. I liked Anita Barriball’s work rubbing graphite onto paper positioned over architectural detail but not sure what it had to do with photography. I also liked the photographs by Jolana Hacelkova of the marks made in ice by skates, which did look like pencil marks.

Closed 3 July 2016.
