Excavations

Interesting small exhibition in the Hayward Gallery Project Space of work using aerial photography by Jananne Al-Ani.

These works are part of an ongoing project “The Aesthetics of disappearance: a land without people” and it examines what happens to the evidence of atrocities and how it affects the landscape. Reflecting the use of aerial photography she shows recently occupied by now deserted spaces which are now defined by their lack of people.

These were haunting images and I liked the way similar images were given a variety which made you look more closely by showing them in different ways, in a light setting and a dark one, as projected film and as a small film to look down on.
