Lucien Freud etchings
Lovely small exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery of nine
etchings recently presented to them by Frank Auerbach plus a portrait of Auerbach
by Freud donated by another foundation to compliment the etchings.
There were some stunning works really showing off Freud’s skills as a draughtsman from the fineness of thistle to the expression of a man. I loved a reclining study of Leigh Bowery looking end on from the top of his head, a touching and unusual view of a figure.
Freud worked directly onto copper plate and there was a
wonderful quote about how he considered the work “What’s black is white. What’s
left is right”.
