Izumi Kato

Strange exhibition at Charleston Farmhouse of work by Izumi Kato.

They were a mix of paintings of amoeba like creatures and painted sculptures made from found objects.

The blurb said the “work explores the space between the physical and the spiritual, the human and the otherworldly” but I’m afraid it didn’t do a lot for me. The sculpture in the garden was effective.

Usually the two shows on at Charleston speak to each other in some way, often picking a contemporary artist whose work mirrors an earlier genre in some way, but in this occasion, I couldn’t see the link to Post-Impressionism.

Closes 2 November 2025
