Wall 2019
Timely installation at the Imperial War Museum to mark the 30th anniversary of the
fall of the Berlin Wall.
Two pieces of the
wall were erected outside the museum. One was painted by the French artist
Thierry Noir who lived in a squat near the Berlin Wall and began painting on it
in 1984, the first artist to systematically paint long stretches of it. He
invited street artist STIK to paint the other piece and together they show two
figures facing towards each other. Noir described is as the 'past engaging with
the present'.
The work looked
striking. The volunteer guides with it were happy to talk to me about it when
they saw me lingering and one shared memories of being a reporter is Berlin at
the time. It was a shame it wasn’t up for longer.
