Antony Gormley: Fit
Fabulous exhibition at White Cube, Bermondsey of new work by Antony Gormley.
The sculptures
were displayed in a redesign of the main, large gallery space by Gormley
himself. The spaces formed a maze with just one or two works in each room. At
the heart was my favourite work “Sleeping Field”, a room of small cubist
figures. Each one, as with all the work, was based on the proportions of
Gormley’s own body and were in different poses. They filled the room which you
could look into through four doors.I could look at it for hours and see a new
shape or character, as with his earlier clay field works I found it a very hard
to walk away from.
All the
attendants were very friendly and chatty and thanks to the lady who explained
the large “Run” to me. It was large box like frame which you could walk though
and had a slight Mondrian effect as you looked through it. Evidently all the
heights and layers in it reflects the length of Gormley’s limbs. The height was
his reach, the lowest level was his knees etc and the maze like structure was
cast on one solid continuous piece.
I chickened out
of going into “Passage” a long, hollow shape of a body which you could walk down.
It looked too long and dark for me but people said the effect of turning round
at the end and walking into the light was magical.
I love the very
simply look of Gormley’s sculpture yet the more you find out about them the
more complex the rationale behind them is.
Closes on 6
November 2016.
