Imagining Islands: artists and escape

Thought provoking exhibition at Courtauld Gallery curated by students on the MA in curating the art museum looking at islands in art.

Islands have been seen as representing elusive ideas and fantasies as well as ideas of paradise and of primitive lives.

It was a chance to see works not usually displayed both from the Courtaulds own collection and from that of the Arts Council.

I loved a little Millais watercolour called “The Parting of Ulysses” with a beautiful blue sky and sea. I was also intrigued by Charles Avery’s on-going project set on an island with fantasy landscapes and narratives and will look out for more of this.
